Bev Tourangeau is the new Hydroponics Lead Hand at the Growcer hydroponics operation located just outside the K’ai Tailé Market in Fort Chipewyan.
Bev is a gardener with two gardens, a greenhouse of her own and a long-time interest in growing things. She starts her vegetables and flowers in her greenhouse to get the most out of the short growing season in Fort Chipewyan.
With all the rain this year her beets have done well and she says it was one of the best years for tomatoes. At the end of the season she cans beets, rhubarb, blueberries and strawberries.
She is quite enthused about the new hydroponics pilot project. “It is good for people to have fresh vegetables, and it would nice if we could plant strawberries and tomatoes.”
The current hydroponics trailer was designed to grow lettuce, leafy vegetables and herbs such as basil, cilantro and parsley.
If the pilot project works well, Bev could get her wish since 3NE has bigger plans to create a major Sustainable Food Production Centre that would produce a wider variety of produce – and more!
